The Rāʾiyyah of Abū Muzāḥim Mūsā ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Khāqānī, who died in Baghdad in 325 AH, is the earliest known poem written on the art of recitation. Its fifty-one lines, each rhyming on the letter rāʾ, address the reciter directly: the virtue of reading well, the duty of learning from a teacher, and the care owed to the letters, to madd, to waqf and to the clarity and merging of sounds.
This free download is the Arabic text of the poem, for students memorising it or reading it with a teacher. Because al-Khāqānī wrote before the science was arranged into its later chapters, the Rāʾiyyah offers a rare view of tajwīd close to its source.
